What is Bhagavad Gita?
Bhagavad Gita also known as the Divine song, is a poem or rather a conversation between Arjuna & Krishna, the 9th avatar of MahaVishnu on Earth. This conversation takes place on the Battle front between the Pandavas & Kauravas at Kurukshetra. It is said that Arjuna, on seeing his families & friends against him, forgot/got confused of his duties as a Kshatriya and Krishna, being the friend of Arjuna, tries to help him out of this delusional state which led to this conversation lasting for 18 days. The Bhagavad Gita is said to subjective to one's imagination & so each of us might be able to observe different meanings and also gain knowledge in various fronts. It's not only a confusion fixing conversation but also relates to a lot of various aspects in one's life like the problems one might face, how to solve it & at last to gain Liberation. So, we can say that Bhagavad Gita acts as a Pathway to One's life.
How many Chapters are there in Bhagavad Gita?
As mentioned above, the conversation which lasted for 18 days is being divided into 18 chapters, each of which contains a number of shlokas/verses of 4 lines each (being a quatrain). Each of these chapters are based on different situations/problems & also describes how to go through each of them and also cleanses one's confusion one-by-one. The chapters are:
- Arjuna Vishada yoga, The Yoga of Arjuna's Dejection.
- Sankhya yoga, The Yoga of Knowledge.
- Karma yoga, The Yoga of One's Actions.
- Jnana Karma Sanyasa yoga, The Yoga of applying Knowledge into One's actions.
- Karma Sanyasa yoga, The Yoga of Action and Knowledge.
- Aathma Samyama yoga, The Yoga of Self-control.
- Jnana Vijnana yoga, The Yoga of Jnana & Vijnana.
- Akshara Brahma yoga, The Yoga of the Indestructible Brahma.
- Raja vidya Raja guhya yoga, The Yoga of Sovereign science & secret.
- Vibhuti yoga, The Yoga of the Divine.
- Vishwa roopa darshana yoga, The Yoga of the Vision of Divine form.
- Bhakti yoga, The Yoga of Devotion.
- Kshetra Kshetrajna Vibhaga yoga, The Yoga of Differentiation of Kshetra (a region) & Kshetrajna (knower of that region/field)
- Gunathraya Vibhaga yoga, The Yoga of Division of Gunas(modes) into three.
- Purushottama yoga, The Yoga of the Supreme.
- Daiva-sura Sampad Dvibhaga yoga, The Yoga of Division between Divine & Demoniacal properties.
- Shradhatraya Vibhaga yoga, The Yoga of Threefold faith.
- Moksha Sanyasa yoga, The Yoga of Liberation through Knowledge, One's actions & surrender.
How many shlokas in Bhagavad Gita?
There are around 700 shlokas/verses, which are quatrains (4 lines each) to resemble a poem and get a rhythmic structure, in Bhagavad Gita. It is spread around in 18 chapters as per the subject of each of the chapters, as mentioned above.
