tasya sañjanayan harṣaṁ
kuru-vṛddhaḥ pitāmahaḥ
siṁha-nādaṁ vinadyochai
śhaṅkhaṁ dadhmau pratāpavān
Meaning :
On hearing these lines from Duryodhana, The grand old man of Kaurava race, Bhishma, roared terribly like a lion and blew his conch.
Comment :
Bhishma, on understanding the unstable condition of Duryodhana, inorder to cheer up his army and Duryodhana, blew his conch. This made the Kaurava's a beginning to the War, as they were the first to blow the conch.
Even though Bhishma knew about the failure they might suffer as Krishna was on the other side, being the Supreme Commander, he had to stand for the Kauravas and make them fight together in the war. This shloka marks the beginning of the war. The blowing of Conch, or Shankh, also shows the beginning of a sacred ceremony or the driving away of evil effects from the environment.
